Resumo O Brasil é o maior produtor mundial de café e diferentes sistemas de manejo têm sido aplicados para melhorar a sustentabilidade e a qualidade do solo. Pouco se conhece sobre os efeitos ambientais desses sistemas de manejo, assim, o objetivo desse estudo foi utilizar parâmetros biológicos do solo como indicadores de mudanças nos sistemas. Foram amostrados, na região sudeste do Brasil, solos com cultivo convencional (CC), orgânico (OC) e sistema integrado de cultivo consorciado com Brachiaria decumbens (IB) ou com Arachis pintoi (IA) na entrelinha. Foram avaliados o carbono orgânico total (TOC), carbono e nitrogênio da biomassa microbiana (MBC e MBN), atividade microbiana (C-CO2), quociente metabólico (qCO2), as enzimas desidrogenase, urease, fosfatase ácida e arilsulfatase, a colonização e número de esporos de fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (AMF) e a fauna do solo. A maior diferença entre os sistemas de manejo foram verificadas no teor de matéria orgânica do solo. O maior teor de TOC foi encontrado no OC, e o menor teor encontrado no sistema IA. O teor de TOC influenciou os parâmetros biológicos e a diferenciação da fauna do solo. O uso combinado de todos os atributos foi necessário para diferenciar os quatro sistemas de cultivo. Cada manejo apresentou estruturas diferentes de fauna, e dados obtidos com o método de armadilhas tipo pitfall foi mais confiável do que o método TSBF (Solos Tropicais). A análise de correlação canônica mostrou que Isopoda foi correlacionado com TOC e a ordem mais abundante em OC. Isoptera foi a ordem da fauna mais abundante em IA e foi correlacionada com MBC. Em geral, OC apresentou os maiores valores para a maioria dos atributos biológicos, inclusive para abundância de indivíduos de Oligochaeta e Isopoda, corroborando com o conceito de que OC é um sistema mais sustentável.

Abstract Brazil is the biggest coffee producer in the world and different plantation management systems have been applied to improve sustainability and soil quality. Little is known about the environmental effects of these different management systems, therefore, the goal of this study was to use soil biological parameters as indicators of changes. Soils from plantations in Southeastern Brazil with conventional (CC), organic (OC) and integrated management systems containing intercropping of Brachiaria decumbens (IB) or Arachis pintoi (IA) were sampled. Total organic carbon (TOC), microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and nitrogen (MBN), microbial activity (C-CO2), metabolic quotient (qCO2), the enzymes dehydrogenase, urease, acid phosphatase and arylsulphatase, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) colonization and number of spores and soil fauna were evaluated. The greatest difference between the management systems was seen in soil organic matter content. The largest quantity of TOC was found in the OC, and the smallest was found in IA. TOC content influenced soil biological parameters. The use of all combined attributes was necessary to distinguish the four systems. Each management presented distinct faunal structure, and the data obtained with the trap method was more reliable than the TSBF (Tropical Soils) method. A canonic correlation analysis showed that Isopoda was correlated with TOC and the most abundant order with OC. Isoptera was the most abundant faunal order in IA and correlated with MBC. Overall, OC had higher values for most of the biological measurements and higher populations of Oligochaeta and Isopoda, corroborating with the concept that the OC is a more sustainable system.

Com o objetivo de estudar a redução de crescimento de mudas de citros micorrizadas, instalou-se um experimento em casa de vegetação com seis doses de P (0, 50, 100, 150, 200 e 250 mg kg-1), sem e com inoculação do Fungo Micorrízico Arbuscular (FMA) Glomus intraradices. Como porta-enxerto, usou-se tangerineira ' Cleópatra' (Citrus reshni). O substrato usado foi uma mistura de amostra de terra (Neossolo) e areia, na proporção de 3:1, com baixa concentração de P disponível. O delineamento estatístico foi inteiramente casualizado, disposto em um fatorial 6 x 2, com cinco repetições. Seis meses após o transplantio, as plantas foram avaliadas por meio das seguintes variáveis: altura de plantas, matéria seca da parte aérea, transpiração, resistência estomática e área foliar. Nas doses mais altas de P, as plantas micorrizadas apresentaram redução na altura, na matéria seca da parte aérea e na área foliar, menor taxa de transpiração e maior resistência estomática, quando comparadas com o controle não micorrizado. Considerando estes resultados, a redução no crescimento de mudas micorrizadas em alta dose de P pode estar relacionada, em parte, com a existência de forte dreno de carboidratos na raiz.

An experiment was installed under greenhouse conditions to study growth depression in mycorrhizal citrus rootstocks at six P levels (0, 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 mg kg-1), with and without (controls) inoculation of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) (Glomus intraradices). The rootstock used was Citrus reshni Hort. Ex Tanaka, cv. Cleópatra, grown in an autoclaved, limed mixture (3:1) of a soil with low available P and washed sand. There were five replicates per treatment, in a random 6 x 2 factorial design. Six months after transplanting the seedlings, the plants were harvested and analyzed. The following characteristics were considered: plant growth, shoot dry matter, leaf area, transpiration and stomatal resistance. At the highest P levels, mycorrhizal plants presented lower dry matter and plant height values, lower leaf transpiration, and higher stomatal resistance, when compared to non-mycorrhizal plants. Therefore, growth depression of mycorrhizal citrus plants at high P levels may be related to a strong carbon sink in mycorrhizal citrus roots.

A toxidez de Mn pode ser atenuada, em algumas situações, pela micorrização das plantas. Mecanismos diretos e indiretos podem estar envolvidos nesse processo. Este trabalho visou avaliar o efeito intrínseco do fungo micorrízico arbuscular (FMA) na absorção e translocação de Mn por plantas de soja. Inicialmente, testaram-se três espécies de FMA quanto à capacidade de propiciar crescimento das plantas sob excesso de Mn. Glomus macrocarpum foi a mais eficiente em proteger as plantas contra o excesso de Mn, resultado da maior retenção de Mn nas raízes e menor translocação para a parte aérea. A simbiose com Gigaspora margarita foi ineficiente e limitou o desenvolvimento das plantas. Num segundo experimento, empregaram-se um cultivar tolerante e outro sensível ao excesso de Mn, em associação ou não com G. macrocarpum. Pretendeu-se verificar ocorrência de oxidação de Mn nas raízes das plantas micorrizadas, sob excesso de Mn. Não houve efeito da micorrização na oxidação de Mn nas raízes, mas na dose de 15 mg kg-1 de Mn, as plantas micorrizadas tiveram maior teor de Mn nas raízes. Houve efeito do cultivar, tendo o tolerante apresentado maior oxidação de Mn nas raízes.

Under certain circumstances, Mn toxicity may be alleviated in mycorrhizal plants. Direct and indirect mechanisms can be involved in this process. Our objective was to evaluate the intrinsic effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on the uptake and translocation of Mn by soybean plants. Initially, three AMF were tested to determine their capacity in enhancing plant growth under Mn excess. Glomus macrocarpum was most efficient at protecting plants against Mn excess, as a result of a higher Mn retention in the roots and lower translocation to the shoots. The symbiosis with Gigaspora margarita was inefficient and restricted plant growth. In a second experiment, we used a Mn-tolerant and a Mn-susceptible soybean cultivar, with and without G. macrocarpum, to investigate if there is an increase of Mn oxidation in roots of mycorrhizal plants. No effect of mycorrhiza on Mn oxidation in the roots was detected, but at the rate of 15 mg kg-1 of Mn, the mycorrhizal plants presented a greater Mn root content. There was a cultivar effect, which caused a higher content of oxidized Mn in the roots of the tolerant one.

Este trabalho teve como objetivos determinar a dependência micorrízica de plantas de Araucaria angustifolia, sob diferentes doses de P, e acompanhar o desenvolvimento do hospedeiro e do endófito após a inoculação. O experimento foi realizado em condições de casa de vegetação, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado num esquema fatorial 4 x 4, sendo: três espécies de fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMA) (Glomus intraradices, Gigaspora rosea e uma mistura de FMAs nativos, provenientes de mata de araucária em Campos do Jordão, no estado de São Paulo, e um controle sem FMA, com quatro doses de P no substrato (0, 20, 50 e 150 mg kg-1 de P na forma de KH2PO4), com cinco repetições. Avaliaram-se a matéria seca da parte aérea e raiz, a taxa de colonização radicular, o número de esporos no solo e os teores de nutrientes presentes na parte aérea da planta. Concluiu-se que a Araucaria angustifolia é planta micotrófica e tem dependência micorrízica até a dose de 150 mg kg-1 de P, sendo a taxa de colonização radicular e esporulação variáveis com a espécie de FMA. A espécie Gigaspora rosea é indicada para baixos teores de P no solo e Glomus intraradices para teores mais elevados, enquanto os FMAs nativos são benéficos ao crescimento da araucária em qualquer teor de P. Independentemente da espécie de FMA, as plantas micorrizadas apresentaram maiores concentrações de P e menores de N e K que as não micorrizadas.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the inoculation effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) of Brazilian pine plants (Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) O. Ktze.) at different P levels. The experimental design was completely randomized with a factorial outlay of four inoculation and four P level treatments in five replications. The Araucaria plants, grown in greenhouse conditions, were inoculated either with Gigaspora rosea, with Glomus intraradices, or with a mixture of AMF, collected in a native Araucaria forest in Campos do Jordão, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The control treatment consisted in non-inoculated plants. Four P levels (0, 20, 50 and 150 mg kg-1 of P in the soil) were tested in the form of KH2PO4. Shoot and root dry matter, AMF root colonization, spore rates in the soil, and nutrient contents in the shoot were evaluated. The conclusion was drawn that Araucaria angustifolia is a mycotrophic plant which presents mycorrhizal dependency up to a P level of 150 mg kg-1 in the soil. Root colonization and sporulation rates varied according to the AMF species. Gigaspora rosea is indicated for soils with a low P level, and Glomus intraradices for higher P levels, while the native AM fungi are beneficial for Araucaria plant growth at all tested P levels. Mycorrhizal plants always presented higher P and lower N and K shoot concentrations than the non-mycorrhizal ones, independent of the AMF species.

A alta disponibilidade de íons metálicos no solo, dentre eles o Mn2+, pode inibir os fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMA), retardando a germinação dos esporos e, conseqüentemente, a formação de micorriza, o que reduz a eficiência simbiótica. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito do íon Mn2+ sobre a germinação de esporos de seis espécies de FMA dos gêneros Glomus, Acaulospora, Gigaspora e Scutellospora em experimento in vitro Em substrato constituído por areia lavada, adicionaram-se 15; 30 e 75 mg kg-1 de Mn2+, na forma de MnCl2.4H2O, mantendo-se um controle sem adição de Mn. Acondicionaram-se os esporos em envelopes membranosos, introduzindo-os entre duas camadas de areia com diferentes níveis de Mn, em placas de Petri. Após 30 dias de incubação, avaliou-se a germinação dos esporos. Houve decréscimo médio de 32, 49 e 75 % na germinação dos esporos, à medida que se aumentaram as doses de Mn, em comparação ao controle. A germinação de esporos do gênero Glomus foi totalmente inibida na maior dose. O gênero Acaulospora sofreu decréscimos de até 50 % já na dose de 15 mg kg-1 de Mn2+, enquanto os gêneros Scutellospora e Gigaspora apresentaram os maiores índices de germinação de esporos, tendo havido tolerância no caso de Gigaspora, mesmo na maior dose de Mn2+, e estímulo à germinação no caso de Scutellospora até à dose 30 mg kg-1 de Mn2+.

The high availability of metallic ions in the soil, including Mn2+, may inhibit arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), slowing down spore germination and, consequently, the mycorrhiza formation, therefore decreasing the symbiotic effectiveness. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Mn2+ ions on spore germination in six AMF species of the genera Glomus, Acaulospora, Gigaspora and Scutellospora under in vitro conditions. Different Mn2+ doses (15, 30 and 75 mg kg-1) as MnCl2.4H2O were added to a washed sand substrate, keeping a control without Mn addition. Spores were accommodated in membranous envelopes which were placed between two sand layers treated with the above Mn doses in Petri dishes. After a 30 day incubation period, spore germination was evaluated, presenting decreases (32, 49 and 75 %) as Mn doses increased, compared to the control. Spore germination in the genus Glomus was completely inhibited at the top dose, while in the Acaulospora genus it dropped down to 50 % even at the lowest dose (15 mg kg-1 of Mn2+). The genera Scutellospora and Gigaspora presented highest germination indexes, out of which Gigaspora presented Mn tolerance, even at the highest Mn2+ dose. Scutellospora presented stimulus for germination up to doses of 30 mg kg-1 of Mn2+.

Visando estudar a influência de fósforo adicionado e fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMAs) no crescimento e nutrição mineral de limoeiro-cravo, instalou-se um experimento em casa de vegetação, com delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 6 x 3, sendo os fatores: (a) seis doses de P (0, 50, 100, 150, 200 e 250 mg kg-1 de substrato) e (b) duas espécies de FMAs (Glomus etunicatum e G. intraradices) e um controle sem FMA, com três repetições, em vasos de 1,7 dm³ de substrato. Após cinco meses do transplantio das mudas de limoeiro-cravo, avaliaram-se a altura, diâmetro do caule, matéria seca da parte aérea das plantas, nutrientes acumulados na parte aérea e percentagem de colonização radicular. No substrato, avaliaram-se o comprimento de micélio extra-radicular ativo (MEA) e total (MET) de FMAs. O porta-enxerto limoeiro-cravo apresentou alta dependência micorrízica na absorção dos nutrientes, quando inoculado com G. intraradices, o que resultou em maior altura, diâmetro de caule e matéria seca da parte aérea das plantas. Apenas essa espécie de FMA formou micorriza com o hospedeiro, com valores de colonização radicular inversamente proporcionais às doses de P adicionado. Houve aumento de MEA e MET com o aumento das doses de P, com alta correlação entre o primeiro e a absorção de nutrientes. Apesar de não colonizar o hospedeiro, a infestação com G. etunicatum resultou em valores de MEA e MET superiores aos do controle, indicando, talvez, capacidade saprofítica desse fungo para sobreviver no substrato.

The aim of this work was to evaluate the influence of P levels and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on growth and mineral nutrition of Citrus limonia. The experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions, with a completely randomized 6 x 3 factorial design, with six P levels (0, 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 mg kg-1 of substrate), two species of AMF (G. etunicatum and G. intraradices) and a control without AMF, with three replicates per treatment, using 1.7 dm-3 pots. Five months after transplanting, plants were assessed for height, stem diameter, shoot dry matter, shoot nutrient content, root colonization and substrate analysis for active (AEM) and total (TEM) extraradical AMF mycelium length. Citrus limonia presented high mycorrhizal dependence on nutrient absorption, mainly when inoculated with Glomus intraradices, which promoted greater plant height, larger stem diameter and greater shoot dry matter production. Only G. intraradices promoted detectable root colonization, with percent root colonization being inversely proportional to the applied P level. AEM and TEM increased in accordance with P levels, and high correlations were found between the former and nutrient absorption. Although no root colonization could be observed, G. etunicatum produced AEM and TEM, which may show a saprophytic capacity for survival in soil.

Em uma associação entre duas espécies de fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMAs) (Glomus intraradices ou Gigaspora margarita) e soja (Glycine max L. Merrill cv. IAC-8), avaliaram-se a produção de massa de material seco da parte aérea (MSPA), a massa de material seco de vagens (MSV), a colonização radicular, a concentração de N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Cu, Fe, Mn e Zn na parte aérea e vagens, além das estimativas do comprimento de micélio externo ativo (MEA) e micélio externo total (MET). As plantas receberam cinco doses de fósforo (0, 25, 50, 100 e 200 mg kg-1) e as avaliações foram feitas em quatro épocas (15, 30, 60 e 90 dias). A inoculação da soja com G. margarita resultou em redução transitória de crescimento aos 60 dias, enquanto aumentos na MSPA devidos à inoculação com os FMAs foram mais evidentes aos 90 dias. A colonização radicular, a produção de MEA e de MET apresentaram relação negativa com o incremento das doses de P nos tratamentos com FMAs. A menor produção de MEA e a fase de crescimento lento mais prolongada observadas no tratamento com G. margarita podem ter colaborado para a redução do crescimento das plantas aos 60 dias. O comprimento de MEA produzido por G. intraradices aumentou com o tempo e diminuiu com o aumento das doses de P. Esses efeitos foram menos evidentes para G. margarita. As concentrações de Fe e Mn nas vagens aos 90 dias foram menores nos tratamentos inoculados com FMAs nas menores doses de P, nas quais foi observada maior colonização radicular.

The objective of this work was to study the association between soybean (Glycine max L. Merr. cv. IAC 8) and two different arbuscular-mycorrhizal (AM) fungi (Gigaspora margarita or Glomus intraradices), grown under increasing rates of phosphorus (0, 25, 50, 100 and 200 mg kg¹) and harvested at four times (15, 30, 60 and 90 days). The assessed variables were: shoot dry weight, pod dry weight, root colonization by AM fungi, the concentrations of N, P, K, S, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Mn, and Zn in shoots and pods, estimation of the length of total external mycelium (TEM) and the length of active external mycelium (AEM). There was a temporal growth reduction in the soybean-G. margarita association at 60 days, and shoot dry weight increase due to AM fungus colonization was more evident at 90 days. Increasing P rates decreased root colonization in both fungi, likewise with TEM and AEM. Colonization by G. margarita was less efficient in a soybean symbiosis because it grew slower than G. intraradices and presented less AEM. This may have been the reason for growth reduction in the soybean-G. margarita association at 60 days. Length of AEM in G. intraradices inoculated soils increased with time and decreased with increasing P rates. Changes in AEM were less evident for the soybean-G. margarita. Iron and manganese concentrations in pods at 90 days were lower in plants colonized by AM fungi at low P rates, where colonization levels were high.

O objetivo do trabalho foi quantificar o micélio extramatricial do fungo micorrízico arbuscular (AM) Glomus etunicatum (Becker & Gerdemann) e medir sua atividade 30, 60 e 90 dias após o plantio (DAP), utilizando-se a cultura do milho (Zea mays L. var. Piranão) com quatro doses de adubação fosfática. O micélio extramatricial total (TEM) foi extraído do solo pelo método da membrana de filtração modificado e foi quantificado pela técnica da grade de interseção. A proporção de micélio extramatricial ativo (AEM) foi determinada pelo método que mede a atividade das enzimas desidrogenases com coloração de iodonitrotetrazolio. Em baixas doses de P,o TEM foi menor do que a quantidade em altas doses de P, mas a proporção de AEM foi maior nas baixas doses de P.

The objective of this experiment was to quantify the extramatrical mycelium of the arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus Glomus etunicatum (Becker & Gerdemann) grown on maize (Zea mays L. var. Piranão) provided with various levels of phosphate fertilizer and harvested at 30, 60 and 90 days after planting (DAP). Total extramatrical mycelium (TEM) was extracted from soil using a modified membrane filtration method, followed by quantification using a grid intersection technique. Active extramatrical mycelium (AEM) proportion was determined using an enzymatic method which measured dehydrogenase activity by following iodonitrotetrazolium reduction. At low levels of added P, there was relatively less TEM than at high levels of added P, but the AEM proportion at low soil P availability was significantly greater than at high soil P.

A determinação do número mais provável (NMP) de fungos e bactérias do solo foi realizada pelo método de plaqueamento por gotas, por meio do qual foi possível economizar meio de cultura e trabalho. O método foi apresentado e comparado com o procedimento convencional de contagem de microrganismos do solo em amostras de solo de diferentes texturas. A sensibilidade desse método foi também observada em experimentos para contagem de microrganismos quando da adição de diferentes fontes de matéria orgânica e de sais de crômio.

The most probable number (MPN) for soil bacteria and fungi was determined using a micro-assay technique, which was more economical and less tedious. This technique was compared with the conventional procedure for counting soil microorganisms in soil samples with different textures. The sensitivity of this method could be also verified when used to evaluate number of microorganisms from different sources of organic matter and chromium added to the soil.

Visando verificar a influência da utilização de diferentes métodos de quantificação de micélio extrarradicular ativo (MEA) e micélio extrarradicular total (MET) de fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMAs) e de diferentes hospedeiros nesta simbiose, foi realizado um experimento em casa de vegetação, com delineamento inteiramente casualizado e esquema fatorial: 3 espécies de FMAs (Glomus intraradices, G. etunicatum e G. clarum) e um controle sem FMA x 6 doses de P (0, 50, 100, 150, 200 e 250 mg kg-1 de substrato) x 2 plantas cítricas: tangerina cleópatra (Citrus reshni) e laranja caipira (Citrus sinensis), com 5 repetições por tratamento. Seis meses após o transplantio e inoculação das mudas, determinaram-se altura e diâmetro do caule, colheram-se as plantas e avaliaram-se matéria seca e nutrientes da parte aérea, porcentagem de colonização radicular e comprimento de MEA e MET pelos métodos de fluorescência induzida com diacetato de fluoresceína (FDA) e redução do iodonitrotetrazólio (INT). As doses crescentes de P proporcionaram redução da porcentagem de colonização radicular nos dois porta-enxertos estudados e aumentos nas características altura, diâmetro, matéria seca da parte aérea e quantidade total absorvida de macro e micronutrientes por ambos os porta-enxertos. Houve correlação negativa entre comprimento de MEA e quantidade total absorvida de macronutrientes (P, N, Ca e Mg) por laranja caipira e correlação positiva entre comprimento de MET e quantidade absorvida por tangerina cleópatra, sugerindo ser esta última mais micotrófica que a anterior, além de haver, possivelmente, outros mecanismos de absorção de nutrientes que não pelo MEA, cujos resultados variaram em função do método empregado.

Different methods for quantification of active extraradicular mycelium (AEM) and total extraradicular mycelium (TEM) of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) were examined by conducting an experiment under greenhouse conditions, with a completely randomized factorial design and five replicates per treatment. The experiment was arranged in a 4 x 6 x 2 design and the factors were: 3 species of AMF (Glomus intraradices, G. etunicatum and G. clarum) and one control without AMF x 6 levels of P (0, 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 mg kg-1) x 2 citrus species (Citrus reshni and Citrus sinensis). Six months after transplanting, height and diameter were evaluated and the plants were harvested. Shoot dry weight, total shoot macronutrients, percentage of root infection and the length of AEM and TEM by the fluorescein diacetate (FDA) and the iodonitrotetrazolium reduction (INT) methods were also evaluated. Increasing levels of P promoted decreases in percentage of root infection and increases in plant height, diameter, dry weight and macro and micronutrients absorbed by both citrus species. There was a negative correlation between AEM and total macronutrients absorbed (P, N, Ca and Mg) by Citrus sinensis and a positive correlation between TEM and those macronutrients by C. reshni indicating that the latter host may be more mycotrophic than the former and, possibly, that there are other mechanisms of nutrient absorption rather than by AEM, with results varying in relation to the method used.

Otimização de métodos de extração e avaliação de micélio extrarradicular ativo (MEA) e total (MET) constituem os principais passos para um estudo mais profundo da interação fungo micorrízico arbuscular (FMA) e hospedeiro, já que a absorção e translocação dos nutrientes do substrato ao hospedeiro são realizadas, respectivamente, por tais estruturas fúngicas. Métodos de extração de micélio extrarradicular de FMAs propostos por diversos autores foram reavaliados e mesclados, originando um método exclusivo e de fácil execução, juntamente com a calibração de métodos para avaliação e quantificação de MEA (fluorescência induzida com a hidrólise do diacetato de fluoresceína e redução de iodonitrotetrazólio), em substrato arenoso.

Extraction and evaluation of active (AEM) and total (TEM) extraradicular mycelium is the first step in a comprehensive study of the interaction between host plant and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), since these hyphae are responsible for nutrient absorption and translocation from the soil to the host. Extraction methods for extraradicular mycelium in the literature were reviewed and reevaluated, and modifications were made, resulting in a new, simple technique.
